Breaking Down Your Copy

Because you are a good actor, it doesn’t necessarily make you a good voice actor. With acting, it’s simple to see subtle reactions by using a gesture or expression. With voice acting, the audience is not able to see you and only relies on what they hear. It is your job as a voice actor to bring the copy to life.
RESOLVE THE CONFLICT
There is always a conflict, and a release or resolution. You need to play both the conflict and the resolution. Commercial copy has to change. It does not have only one feeling!

YOUR COACH IS YOUR BFF Many voice actors never planned to be in voice over, and end up in the field by accident from an audition that an agent sent them out on. Suddenly they are booking voiceover gigs and call themselves a “voice actor.” Yet, often they have little training in what they do and little articulation as to what their process is when they break down, interpret and audition with commercial copy. It is important to work with a coach who understands the vocal instrument, acting, and voice overs. There are coaches out there that focus on audio engineering or demos, and there are coaches that focus on acting and performance techniques. A strong voice and actor-focused coach will assist a voice talent with solid skill-building and performance technique when the audition or job heat is on. It ensures the talent to have the best tools to deliver the goods in the booth. AUDITIONING IS YOUR JOB NOT A STEPPING STONE TO A JOB If you are getting auditions, you are a working actor or voice actor. Auditions are big part of the job. I have heard coaches suggest that actors “pretend” an audition is a booking. Don’t pretend! It is the booking and your work! You are working with the pros and breaking down copy. You are showcasing your best skills as a working actor. That job is yours while you interpret the copy. Auditions become a totally different experience when approaching the audition as the job! Vocal Health

Voice and Performance

Students always ask about vocal health, so I thought I’d refresh one of my blog post’s with this hot topic. Here are some tips to keep your voice in tip-top shape.

HYDRATION: Drinking water is the best thing you can do to keep your vocal folds hydrated. Although it’s soothing for water to pass through the vocal folds or when your throat is irritated, it takes approximately 20 minutes for water to actually hit your system and hydrate your vocal folds. So, hydrate throughout the day for your voice and health in general. I recommend drinking at least 64 ounces. That’s a little less than two liters per day. If you are not getting that amount of water every day, try to slowly increase your water intake until you reach that goal. Also, eat fruits and vegetables high in water content for hydration and energy.

EATING: Think like an athlete before a performance. Athletes don’t usually stuff themselves with food right before a big game and neither should you. A full stomach inhibits the diaphragm from proper movement, which can make it difficult to take in full and deep breaths. It can also cause burps. On the other hand, don’t starve yourself because you need fuel. Performing requires energy so fuel yourself with the proper nutrition. Have a light meal a couple of hours before a a performance, and if you need to eat in between go for easily digestible food.

ALLERGY RELIEF: Pollen season and other allergies can really irritate the throat and vocal folds, especially if you have post-nasal drip. Prescription and over-the-counter allergy medicine can overly dry out your vocal folds. If it is necessary to take allergy medicine, you must constantly drink water and steam or humidify the air to aid in counteracting the dryness.

FOODS & DRINKS TO AVOID BEFORE A PERFORMANCE:

  • Any ice cold beverage may constrict the throat
  • Dairy products such as cheese, milk, and ice cream can add mucous
  • Spicy foods and coffee (due to the caffeine) can irritate the throat
  • Caffeine, alcohol, and citrus fruits (like lemon or lime) can cause dryness in the throat
  • Soda and carbonated beverages cause air to build in the stomach

SOOTHE AN IRRITATED THROAT:

  • If your throat is irritated, try to avoid warm up/cool down exercises and avoid singing or talking as best as you can. If it is necessary, try humming or lip trill vocal exercises.
  • Avoid clearing your throat and whispering as best as you can. When you clear your throat, it’s like slamming your vocal folds together. Doing it too much can injure them and make your voice hoarse.
  • Whispering causes more strain on the vocal folds and causes more irritation.
  • Avoid harsh household chemicals like bleach
  • Avoid smoking, and smoke-filled areas
  • Keep hydrating with water
  • Humidifiers keep the air moist. Personal steamers are inexpensive and are great for travel.
  • Soothe an irritated throat and improve your complexion by steaming: Boil filtered or distilled water and pour it into a bowl. Get a large towel, lean over the bowl and make a tent to trap the steam by using a large towel over your head. Inhale gently through your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes or until there is no more steam.
  • Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat tea
  • Thayer’s slippery elm lozenges or anything with slippery elm in it
  • Licorice root tea or candy
  • Sunrider Calli or Fortune Delight Tea
  • Honey
  • Vocalzone throat drops
  • Warm, not hot water
  • Herbal / non-caffeinated tea
  • Salt water or Baking soda gargles: Mix ¼ teaspoon of baking soda + ¼ teaspoon of salt + 1 cup of warm water. Take in a small amount and alternate gargling at both a high & low pitch. Spit it out and repeat several times.

Create a Mastermind Group to Help You Achieve Your Goals

I found a great blog post about this wonderful concept of Mastermind Groups. I hope you find it & several links below to be helpful in helping you gain success in your field. Happy Masterminding! :)

———————-

What is a Mastermind Group and How Can it Help You Succeed?

by Stephanie Brail

What is a mastermind group? No, we’re not talking about a secret cabal of evildoers out to take over the world. A mastermind group is simply an alliance of two or more individuals dedicating themselves to a specific goal.

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, first defined the mastermind as a “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.”

Hill’s concept of the “Master Mind” was inspired by Andrew Carnegie, wealthy steel magnate. According to Hill:

“Mr. Carnegie’s Master Mind group consisted of a staff of approximately fifty men, with whom he surrounded himself, for the DEFINITE PURPOSE of manufacturing and marketing steel. He attributed his entire fortune to the POWER he accumulated through this ‘Master Mind.’”

Since the publication of Think and Grow Rich in the 1937, the idea of mastermind groups has grown and evolved to become a staple tool of successful individuals.

The benefits of having a supportive mastermind group are plenty:

1.You have a group of people available to help you succeed.
2.You get the benefit of differing perspectives, input and feedback.
3.Your mastermind team can bring resources and connections to the table you might not have had on your own.
4.You receive accountability and inspiration from the group, thus enabling you to maintain focus in achieving your goals.

Napoleon Hill even went so far as to say there was a mystical quality created when a mastermind group was formed. He said: “No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.”

In other words, your ability to create things in the world is increased by having that invisible “third mind” of the mastermind group.

Creating a mastermind group does not necessarily require 50 men, as Carnegie used. Your mastermind group can be as small as two people and as big as your ability to coordinate it.

There are two basic types of mastermind groups: One which is focused on the success and vision of one individual, and one that is focused on helping everyone in the group.

The mastermind group Carnegie had was solely directed at his personal vision. The 50 men in the group were not all there to discuss their own projects. They were all focused on one main goal: the building of a steel empire.

This is actually the classical definition of a mastermind group, and creating one isn’t as hard as you might think.

To create a mastermind group that is dedicated to helping you achieve your personal goals, you can simply reach out to people in your network and explain to them that you are seeking their help as an advisor and part of your mastermind team. Consider this your own personal board of directors.

You’d be surprised at how willing many people are to help when asked, since it is an honor to be asked for an advice or an opinion. You don’t necessarily need to meet with your entire team in person in a formal setting. You might chat with each individually on the phone, or set up an email discussion list.

Thomas Leonard, considered by many to be the founder of modern day personal coaching, used to set up what he called “R&D teams” for his projects (R&D stands for “research and development). These R&D teams he created consisted entirely of email lists where he would throw out ideas and projects for group feedback. Through this process, he was able to create a thriving coaching community at Coachville.com.

No-one was paid to be a part of Leonard’s R&D teams, but they were quite popular because they gave the members a sense of contribution and ownership in the projects.

The second type of mastermind group is one where all members of the group are meeting to support one another in achieving a goal. These types of groups are everywhere, but aren’t always named mastermind groups. An Alcoholics Anonymous meeting is a form of a mastermind group, where the members get together to support each other in their sobriety.

More often, when someone mentions that a mastermind group is forming, they mean a group dedicated to success and achievement. You can create a group that is led by a facilitator (sometimes paid), or a group that is run by members. These groups can meet in person, over a telephone conference line, or even in online chat rooms.

Finally, don’t forget that your friends and family can become a mastermind support system for you. (Unfortunately, the reverse is also true – negative friends and family can equally drag you down, so be careful.) If you don’t have the time to start or join a formal mastermind group, you might be lucky enough to find a good friend to share your successes with. Such a friend is one who unconditionally supports you and isn’t covertly blocking your progress through their own jealousies and insecurities.

Such friends are hard to find sometimes, but if you can get one, consider yourself quite lucky.

However you create a mastermind support system for yourself, consider it an essential part of your success plan. As Napoleon Hill said:

“Analyze the record of any man who has accumulated a great fortune, and many of those who have accumulated modest fortunes, and you will find that they have either consciously, or unconsciously employed the ‘Master Mind’ principle.”
